There are parts of our environment and society that we often turn our backs on. If we acknowledge them at all, they are put in the back of our memory where they become like ghosts of what we would rather not face or record in history.
I believe the necessary underpinnings of our society are not so distasteful that they need be approached only as something ugly or sensational. By approaching from a different angle, by showing the edge in a softer, more approachable way, might we learn to look on and work in our society as a whole rather than deny what we wish were not there? Might we not record our history in all its truth and not as a memory of better times that never really existed?
My work conveys the parts of our world that we are more inclined to hide or turn away from. Amongst the modern facades, the aesthetically pleasing coatings and clean surfaces we try to make of our everyday world are the realities of our existence and these fragments constantly battle to make themselves known to us. By softening the edges and colours of the often unpalatable, I hope to make them more accessible - more easily understood and less disposable be they places, people, nature, or the simple beauty of decay that inevitably leads to new life.
